Food Hygiene Rating scheme

Client: Food Standards Agency

Insight

It’s not easy to judge hygiene standards on appearance of restaurants, takeaways and food shops alone.

The Food Standards Agency wanted a rating scheme that would give consumers a clear and instant idea of what’s going on in the kitchen, or behind closed doors.

Idea

An official rating sticker that appears in the window of all food establishments called the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS), helping consumers to choose where to eat out or shop by giving them information about the hygiene standards.

Design

Working closely with the FSA, I created the branding and design for the sticker that now appears across all food establishments in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The final design shows a clear and clean rating device, with a ‘button’ scaling device to show higher or lower ratings can be achieved with regular hygiene testing. Other design elements include a certificate, Welsh logo, bilingual logo and certificate.

Impact

The Food Hygiene Rating scheme and stickers run across 90,000+ food establishments in England, Wales and Scotland.

No matter where I am in the UK, I see my own work every time I go outside, and that is pretty mindblowing!
